The Ruins - A group of twenty somethings head into the jungle to see a Mayan temple that's off the beaten track. As you can imagine, this is a bad idea. The temple is protected by a group of murderous locals, but they're not the main problem. The Ruins are home to a plant that has a mind of its own, and likes the taste of human flesh. Shit happens, as it always does in these movies. And, annoyingly, the loud, whiny one got to survive for the length of the movie. We got bored and fast forwarded the last 45 minutes... I didn't care whether the characters lived or died. Actually, they didn't die fast enough.

X files: I want to believe - enjoyed it as an elegy to past glories but the story could have been stronger. There were lots of little references to the original series, and seeing Mulder in a beard was funny for all of two minutes. Billy Connelly did a good job with a largely unsympathetic character, and Scully still looks pretty hot. But the main conceit, the possibility of head transplants, just wasn't strong enough to carry a movie... it felt more like an extended episode of the series. I liked the fact that they explored Scully's crisis of faith, but it was a bit heavy handed and intrusive, detracting from the main story. Stil, nice to see them back, even if they didn't get to run around in the woods with torches this time around.

Hellboy 2 - Way over the top, but visually stunning, and enjoyable enough up till the last twenty minutes. Why have a huge golden army as the point of the movie then not show some mass destruction?

Well, I went with 30 Days of Night. A vamp movie... what a surprise Smiley

I didn't have much hope for this, given the dearth of decent vampire movies over the last few years, but this one surprised me. Not only was it glossier and better produced than I expected, but the acting was of a higher quality that you usually get in these kind of movies. The plot is based on a surprisingly effective premise; vampires arrive in a remote Alaskan town on the day that the sun disappears for a month. They send in a "renfield" to kill the town's dogs and cut off the power.

It ramps up in tension from there. It plays more like a zombie siege movie than any other vamp movie I've seen, and the vamps themselves seem to like shedding blood more than drinking it. Be warned, the gore level is quite high, and nice people come to extremely bloody ends, even the kiddies. And the vamps aren't lounging around being sexy. These are real bloodsucking bastards, and all the better for it.

Josh Hartnett is still a work in progress as an actor, but he's better here than I've seen him in anything else, probably because he's mostly reacting to dramatic events rather than trying to portray anyone too complex. Still, with this he's proved he can carry a movie, and I think we'll be seeing more of him in action roles soon.

Like most horror movies, it suffers from several "lets do something -really- stupid" moments, but the whole thing is done with enough style and pace to get you through them without too much shouting at the screen. I particularly liked the overhead panning shots as the vamps took the town apart.

In all, I enjoyed it. It was only later that I started to ask questions, like why the vamps wasted so much blood, and where they got their language skills, why they avoided the big utilities building with all the lights on, and where they went to after the final confrontation. But those are just quibbles.

It's gone back on the shelf to be watched again, and that doesn't happen with many horror movies these days.

I've seen this movie on Sky3, home of such programmes as 'When Sharks Attack', 'When Sharks Attack Again' & 'When Sharks Don't Attack Again But We've Got Enough Footage To Make Another Show About Sharks'.  Grin

Words cannot do justice to the film, suffice to say that the CGI seemed to be created with a Playstation 1 development kit.  Grin

Just saw Wendigo.

Oh lord. Sometime in the mid-60s or so, a bunch of hippies cum filmmakers had a camera and a stretch of Wyoming Preserve to run through.

It wasn't a movie per say. It was more like Kraft cheese, which is not made of cheese at all.

Just watched OUTLANDER ... here's all you need to know. No real SPOILERS here.

There's a crashed spaceship that has two survivors... one man, one big honking alien. Man meets Vikings and does manly Viking stuff to prove his worth. Alien eats other Vikings. All Vikings get pissed off. Vikings and man fight alien. Several times. There's a big climax... the end.

Simple plot, cliched acting and dialogue, and I can't quite do the reach to see John Hurt as a Viking chieftan. But it looks great... just disengage brain and let the eye candy do its work.

(And it was filmed in Newfoundland!)
